The cinematography is utterly gorgeous while being claustrophobic and fusing the film with the fevered manic energy of an acid trip. Likewise, the sound schema/score further this hypnotic effect to the point that the most outlandish details seem like a logical extension of the setting. The film does a great job of positioning the visuals as period while maintaining symbolic weight. The actual lighthouse looks phallic while also looking like a New England lighthouse. Eggers, judging by this and The VVitch, creates films unto themselves in their atmospheric potency. Regardless of what one makes of the storyline the cinematic quality is simply too striking to ignore.
The storyline is deceptively simple; two men slowly lose their minds as interpersonal tension becomes too much to bare. The film is fundamentally about power dynamics between men and how traditional notions of masculinity don't align with their lived experience, and desire. The homoerotic content is barely subtext and the film is one of the best I have seen at how homosexual desire can feel alien because of the homophobic crap that this culture saddles everyone with. The story is one part comedy, one part horror but there is a romantic (for lack of a better term) feeling to parts of this film and it is strikingly *intimate* in how physical contact (of all types) occur between the characters. This may be the most complete portrait of how male relationships sour since Gerry.
Dafoe is the best supporting actor of the year. Dafoe's Thomas is just the right sort of crazy, gruff, melancholy and yes raw, primal emotion that the story needs. He stays with you for ever after watching this film. Pattinson is no slouch either and this may be his most realized performance. This is truly a great film.
